The thought of Botox can be scary especially when you see images of overdone celebrities.... but it is much more commonly used than you would believe in Taranaki with great results. It is used through all age groups and in both men and women. In the hands of an experienced highly trained injector like Charlotte, Botox subtly and safely reduce dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that create skin lines.
What is botulinum and what does it do?
Botulinum is a natural protein that causes muscle relaxation. This causes the overlying skin to become smoother, preventing lines from becoming deeper and longer. By relaxing specific downward pulling muscles, facial expression can be lifted, giving a more refreshed appearance. Relaxant can also release dimpling of the chin, slim the jaw line and reduce excessive sweating. Brands such as Xeomin, Dysport and Botox have all been approved under the Medicines Act and have an excellent safety profile.
Is Botox safe?
Yes. Botox has been used cosmetically for over 20 years with no known side effects. Botox is also used for over 300 different medical conditions at doses of 100-300 units. Comparatively, cosmetic treatments use low doses of around 20 units.
How long does it last?
Results begin after 1-3 days, with the full effect seen at two weeks. Longevity is generally 3-4 months but may be shorter or longer depending on dose, area treated and individual metabolism. At Skin on Forty Five we value looking natural, and favour a regular minimum dose prescription to achieve the best result. Longevity typically increases after 2-3 years of regular treatments. Using medical-grade skincare in conjunction with Botulinum treatments will topically nourish the relaxed skin, strengthen skin health and improve the result long term.
Botulinum can also reduce perspiration, by blocking the chemical nerve pathways that stimulate sweat glands. Reduced sweating lasts about 7 months, and often only two treatments are required to permanently reduce sweating levels. It is still recommended to wear deodorant after treatment, even when perspiration is controlled.
Who should not have botulinum treatment?
Those who are pregnant or breast-feeding, have an infection at the site of treatment or have myasthenia gravis or motor neurone disease.
How much does Botox cost?
At Skin on Forty-Five we design our Botox treatments to ensure the best outcome for you. Because of this we charge per Unit injected. If you would like to chat to Charlotte about how we can make a plan to suit your desires and affordability get in touch for a free consultation.
Does Botox require any downtime and is the treatment long?
No. You may resume all normal activities straight after being treated however, we do recommend no leaning or putting pressure on the treated sites for up to 5 days. After consent and education, the actual Botox treatment is relatively quick - expect 10 minutes.
What are the possible side effects?
It is possible to experience slight tenderness or bruising where the needle has been introduced. There have been reports of headache or prolonged headache after treatment and very rarely flu-like symptoms. Rarely, botulinum can diffuse to surrounding muscles, causing temporary unwanted weakness. This typically wears off over 2-8 weeks. Areas that could be affected depend on treatment area and include:
What should I do after my treatment?
• Avoid making the face flush, such intense exercise, saunas and excess alcohol, for the rest of the day.
• Avoid rubbing the area for four hours.
• Avoid brow waxing or tattooing for two weeks.
• Wear mineral makeup and cleanse your face as normal.
We recommend booking a complementary follow-up consultation at 2 weeks after treatment to review your result. Further treatment is usually at additional cost.
If I start using Botox, will I have to continue for the rest of my life?
No. You can stop whenever you like with no adverse effects. The nice thing about Botox is that if you have one treatment and decide not to continue, your muscles will go back to normal and the lines will gradually come back, but if you consistently have a series of treatments, we start to 'train' the muscles, and the lines will take a lot longer to come back. Botox reduces the damage to the skin caused by facial expressions and gives skin space to repair.
